M. Baris Yegena graduated from Mimar Sinan University - Faculty of Architecture in 1994. Until 2009 has worked in Alpar Architectural Company and in 2011, YEGENA Architectural Design and Consultancy was founded. Here are developed apart from competitions, projects that are open to renovation, and providing consultancy services.
WE THINK IDEAS COMPETITIONS ARE
FORMULA 1 RACES OF ARCHITECTURE.
THE ARCHITECTURAL EVOLUTION WOULD
BE SLOWER WITHOUT THEM.
How would you introduce you and your studio to our readers?
Under the umbrella of an architectural design and project organization, we are working on projects of any kind that are open to renovation, and providing consultancy services. Mainly, it is the projects with extraordinary discourse which make us happy to be involved.
Do you have any specific method to approach each new project?
For revealing the idea that provides a form, we use a wide variety of methods which are "evoked" by the idea. We accept this as an obligation.
In your point of view, what should be the role of architecture or architects in society?
This question's answer will surely have a big change by the society's description. In societies having positiveness like being developed, well-operated, high educated or standardized, architects could have do their part with ease. On the other hand, it is a hassle for architects to do their job in societies where these components are weak. In our opinion, all architects should answer that question according to the society they are serving. In this context, for a really general meaning, architecture is the physical formations that are realized by society's requirements, values and capabilities. The architect is the person who gives shapes to this formations.
ARCHITECTURE IS THE PHYSICAL FORMATIONS
THAT ARE REALIZED BY SOCIETY'S REQUIREMENTS
VALUES AND CAPABILITIES. THE ARCHITECT IS THE
PERSON WHO GIVES SHAPE TO THIS FORMATIONS
Are there any other architects whose work inspires you? Were there any other architects that have influenced you earlier in your career?
At the present time we are encountering very successful works and we really endeavor to stay original in spite of them.
Of course, we had examined the masters like Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto at the beginning of our education and Lebbeus Woods, Alvaro Siza, Renzo Piano later with admiration.
How relevant is an online presence for you in our profession? Promotion / discussion / exhibition / networking ?
Online presence became an indispensable part of architecture's nature as it does in all vocations.
[You can follow their work and social media activity in Facebook, Pinterest, Behance and Archello]
Do you have a particular visual language or material palette? Can you point out any recurring theme that brings all of your projects together?
Actually this is necessary to create a style. But at this point we use entirely different formation methods for each new project. Each project should be isolated from the other projects and should not be associated to other ones. Most of time at the expense of not having a style, we avoid repeating ourselves.
Our formation tools are not different from the usually known. Primarily we always start in this order with sketch, models and 3 dimensional program's help. And we present the resulting product with different presentation programs.
MOST OF THE TIME, AT THE EXPENSE OF NOT
HAVING A STYLE, WE AVOID REPEATING OURSELVES
What is the most motivating work you are developing presently?
In our Halimoğlu showroom project, both the design process and the resulting project was satisfying for us. Nowadays, it inspires a few important designers, as we see. We are happy about it.
What would you recommend to younger professionals?
We ask this question to our younger friends first:
"Are you sure?"
You have previously participated in several competitions. Your victory in Istanbul Community Market Competition was widely praised by the Jury. How has the win impacted your professional practice?
About this subject, the announcements that we have done along with Ctrl+Space were met with lots of positive feedback.
What is your opinion on Ideas Competitions on the development of the professional practice?
We think Ideas Competitions are Formula 1 Races of architecture. In our opinion, the architectural evolution would be slower without them.
The residential program has been in your scope for quite a long time. Bringing to mind Baris thesis: A Research on Functional and Formative Questioning of the House and Its Vicinity in Terms of Architecture "A Place for People" how do you feel the Hybrid Housing Competition can positively impact the city of Hamburg? What are you expecting from the participants of this competition?
An instance that mentioned in Barış's Thesis was narrating a building block that would be presented to society as a house. The main idea of this process was the cooperation of contractor, architect and local community. By this process every household could obtain suitable housing for themselves. This could be a model for social houses which would be built afterwards.
We think that the designs using this method can also be realized in a city district like St. Pauli in which many people who have different opinions and cultures live in a harmony. We guess the results of this competition will be humanistic , society oriented and appropriate.
We think another criterion would be the articulation of St. Pauli's current or historical character in the best way. To give an example, in 1900's, in the competition area, there were also structures which are similar with the programs that is given now, we guess. We think using this deja vu could give exciting results, in new recommended program. ■
